Both players coming in at 4-1, knowing that X-2 has a chance but X-1 is soooo much better, this is
a key matchup. It's also a near mirror, as both players brought fairly typical and quite similar Faeries builds.
Danny had one Loxodon Warhammer in his main deck;
other differences were limited to four staples of the deck, and a slight tweak of the lands:
| Paige | Card | Danny |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Scion of Oona | 4 |
| 2 | Vendilion Clique | 1 |
| 2 | Sower of Tempation | 3 |
| 3 | Jace Beleren | 1 |
| 2 | Faerie Conclave | 3 |
| 3 | Swamp | 1 |
Danny's list, along with all Top 8 decks, compliments of DeckCheck.net
Die Roll - Dan rolls 9, Paige rolls 5.
With a matchup this close, a lot is determined by little things - like land drops. Sure enough, Paige missed a couple of her early land drops, and it didn't hurt Danny any to be the first kid on his block with a Bitterblossom
Paige gets slapped with double Thoughtseize,
netting Agony Warp and
Spellstutter.

Thoughtseize requires careful notes, it seems…
Danny plays land number four, Paige finds Bitterblossom — but no land; Danny's up to four land, which gets him a Scion, after serving bitter beats with a couple tokens.
Paige finally rips her third land, but passes; Danny sends in the tokens again. Paige hits Danny's Scion with Agony Warp and blocks token on token.
Finally finding her fourth land, Paige attempts a Scion to call her own during Danny's end of turn; Danny has the Remove Soul and Paige has nothing to do on her turn.
After another attack from Danny, he adds Sower of Tempation; Paige is good at Magic, but she's good at math, too - and scoops 'em up.
The two sideboards vary a bit more than the decks, both in numbers and cards:
| Paige | Card | Danny |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Thoughtseize | 2 |
| 4 | Infest | 1 |
| 3 | Flashfreeze | 4 |
| 2 | Bottle Gnomes | — |
| 1 | Sower of Temptation | — |
| 3 | Relic of Progenitus | — |
| — | Negate | 3 |
| — | Peppersmoke | 2 |
| — | Puppeteer Clique | 3 |
Just like missing land drops, mulligans can be huge in this matchup, and Paige isn't happy to toss her seven, settling on the next six. Meanwhile, Danny drops Secluded Glen and shows a Bitterblossom, then uses that Glen for a Thoughtseize to deny Paige her own Bitterblossom.
Danny drops his Bitterblossom, then a second copy; that just seems unfair. During his next upkeep, Paige introduces Mistbind Clique to the board; Danny floats a mana into his draw step and dumps it into a Mutavault when he doesn't draw anything more exciting.
Paige is getting aggressive, running that Mistbind into Danny's chump…err, Faerie tokens. Then that random 1-of in Danny's deck makes an appearance, and a difference. Loxodon Warhammer sticks, and when Danny tries to lace it up on a token, Paige responds with Agony Warp. Danny has the timely Spellstutter to stop the agony, and with Paige now drawing off the top…

uhhh, no, these lands aren't much help…
